Department of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) offers a four-year professional degree program (BSc in Medical Laboratory Science) which is designed with 120 credits curriculum to produce competent graduates in the field of Medical Laboratory Science to cater the growing demands of the society and to provide quality laboratory service for the public. Graduates of the Medical Laboratory Science program at the University of Peradeniya obtain high standard skills and knowledge in variety of fields including clinical biochemistry, heamatology, clinical microbiology, histotechnology and transfusion science which enable them to achieve an excellent reputation locally, nationally and internationally.

Based on the recommendations of the UGC and Ministry of Higher Education, the Bsc in Medical Laboratory Science degree programme was initiated in 2007 at the University of Peradeniya. A senior academic, Prof. DM Dissanayake from the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine was appointed as the overall coordinator of the program and was tasked with implementing this programme at the University of Peradeniya. Prof. DM Dissanayake worked tirelessly and contributed her maximum effort to implement this programme at the University of Peradeniya. Thus, in recognition of her invaluable contribution to the BSc in Medical Laboratory Science degree program, she is now regarded as founder head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
