The Nursing Pledge Ceremony, Batch 2020/2021

The Nursing Pledge Ceremony organized by the Department of Nursing for batch 2020/2021 undergraduate students was successfully held on 08 th December 2023, at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
This year, the ceremony was organized, symbolizing the landmark of undergraduate nursing students of the batch 2020/2021 completing their first academic year and stepping towards the advanced nursing practice, thus they were offered with nursing caps and customary three wicked lamps that imply the knowledge and the skillful hands inspired by a loving heart. Expressing the intention of the ceremony, then students promised by taking “Florence Nightingale Pledge” with great vigor and voice laced with pride and confidence to abide by the ethical and moral aspects of a professional nurse.
A gathering of distinguished invitees and the parents of the students participated to witness this
ceremonial event. Accordingly, the Department of Nursing was truly gratified to welcome Mrs.
M.B.C. Samanmali, Director Nursing (Medical Services), Ministry of Health as the Chief Guest
for the ceremony. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. M.D. Lamawansa,
the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Terrance Madhujith, the Dean of Faculty of Allied Health
Sciences Prof. Lalani Yatawara, Deans from other fellow faculties of the University of
Peradeniya, Directors of affiliated institutes and Teaching Hospitals, Heads and the academic
staff members of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and extended staff from clinical training
setup were also special among the invited dignitaries.
The Chief Guest; Mrs M.B.C. Samanmali, through her remarkable speech, made the occasion to
motivate the nursing students to acquire knowledge, skills, caring attitudes and to deliver their
bounded duties with compassion while shouldering the sense of responsibility of human lives. It
was not forgotten to commemorate the Lady Florence Nightingale; the founder of modern
organized nursing practice, thus the Chief Guest together with Vice Chancellor of University of
Peradeniya ignited the traditional Nightingale Lamp and garlanded the gleaming statue of the
Lady Florence Nightingale, along with the gratitude of all the participants at the event.
It is the utmost privilege of Department of Nursing to acknowledge each and every individual
contributed their tireless efforts to make this accomplishment a great success. And, we wish the
very best and prosperous future endeavors for the undergraduate nursing students of the batch
2020/2021, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
