Blood Pressure Screening Programme conducted by students of the Society of Undergraduate Nursing Students (SOUNS)
In recognition of the growing global concern surrounding hypertension, a blood pressure screening programme was conducted by students of the Society of Undergraduate Nursing Students (SOUNS) on 17th of May 2023 at the entrance of the administrative building in Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya. It was conducted parallel to the World Hypertension Day 2023 and the main aim of the screening programme was to raise awareness about high blood pressure, its impact on health, and the importance of regular screenings. Weight, height, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist to hip ratio and blood pressure were measured using standardized procedures. The measurements were recorded, and participants were informed of their readings along with relevant explanations. Educational sessions were conducted to disseminate information about hypertension prevention, management, and the importance of regular screenings. These sessions aimed to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their health.
Participants with high blood pressure readings or those at risk were provided individual consultations. They were given personalized guidance on managing their blood pressure through lifestyle changes, diet modifications, stress reduction techniques, and, if necessary, referred to the University health center for further medical evaluation.
