Dean's Message

Welcome to the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences being established in 16th July 2006, is the youngest addition to the University. It is the only Faculty dedicated to the Nursing and Allied health higher education.  The faculty offers six degree programmes through its five departments of studies. B.Sc. degrees in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Radiotherapy and B.Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy) The Radiography and Radiotherapy degrees are offered only from our faculty.

The first batch have already being graduated and will be receiving their degree certificates at the 2012 March convocation. The annual intake of the faculty is around 170 for all degree programmes. The Faculty is considering increasing the intake once Ministry of Health will finalize the recruitment criteria for graduate nurses and other paramedics.

Initially all the degree programmes were designed as four year degree programmes which comprise to the international standard.

Being the unique nature of these degree programmes The faculty finds it difficult to recruit qualified academics as well as technical staff hence the faculty is heavily depend on the expertise services from other faculties and also from other government and public institutes. At present faculty has eighteen permanent academic staff, four of them are engaged in their higher studies abroad.

Another difficulty we are facing is lack of hospitals for undergraduate training The only teaching hospital assigned for our students is Kurunegala teaching Hospital which is about 50 Km away from Peradeniya and everyday students have to spend three hours for transport. The faculty is negotiating with the Ministry of Health and nutrition for getting access to the Hospital which are closer to the Faculty.

Despite of all these restrictions and lack of facilities I am happy about the development of the faculty during the last six years. I wish the faculty with the efforts of staff and students will achieve its academic heighten in the near future.

Dr. D.B. Mahinda Wickramarathne
