FAREWELL TO THE FORMER ASSISTANT REGISTRAR-MR.AHAMED AZHAR.
Mr.Ahamed Azhar who functioned as the Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences from 03rd January 2011 upto 15th July 2014 went on transfer to the South Eastern university,where his home town is located after serving for the faculty for nearly three and half years.The Welfare Society of the faculty organised a party to bid farewell to this gentleman.The Dean of the faculty, Heads of Departments,administrative officers and non academic staff members commended the service rendered to the faculty by him. A gift and a memento were presented to him by the Welfare Society in appreciation of his invaluable service to the faculty of Allied Health Sciences and wished him all the best in future endeavours.Finally,Mr.AhamedAzharthanked the Dean of the faculty,academic,administrative and non-academic staff members for extending their fullest co-operation to carry out the functions of the faculty satisfactorily.

"B.Pharm Curriculum Review" workshop was conducted by the Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of AHS on 05th June 2014. The outcome of the workshop was excellent. We, as the staff of University of Peradeniya are proud to be part of this national task which was completed successfully. It was evident from the evaluation sheet submitted by the participants. The team work and contributions of resource persons have played an important aspect to shape the B.Pharm curriculum with international standard. more
Dr. H.M.T.U Herath, Senior Lecturer attached to the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, will be visiting University College London from 22nd July 2014 to 05th August 2014, under the Royal Society Supported International Exchange 2013/R2 (inc.CNRS) to carry out the collaborative research activities on "Evaluation of a Sri Lankan nano-hydroxyapatities for orthopaedic patterning" with Prof. Mohan Edirisinghe, Bonfield Chair of Biomaterials, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College London, UK. Dr. Herath act as the overseas scientist for the above collaborative research project approved by Royal Society supported International Exchange Programme for two years from 01st December 2013 to 30th November 2015.
Six students (two students of each Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, and Radiography) from 2009/2010 batch are visiting to the School of Health Sciences, Niigata University, Japan under the Student Exchange Programme of University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Niigata University, Japan from 25^th Sep. 2014 to 15^th Feb. 2015 for undergraduate research study.
The Inauguration Programme of the new batch 2012/2013 of students was held on 05th of May 2014 at the Main lecture hall of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. The distinguished guests were the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, the Proctor and Deans of other Faculties of the University. The programme began with the traditional oil lamping. Heads of the Departments, executive staff, all academic and non academic staff were participated. The programme was well organized with the help of students of the faculty.
The English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences conducted the University Test of English Language (UTEL) Examinations with great success for the year 2013. This is a standardized blended examination which measures the general English language proficiency of the undergraduates in Sri Lankan Universities. The UTEL examination comprises of four components and is a part of the HETC Project which aims to establish national standards in English language proficiency.

A lecture on "Suicide Prevention" was held on 19th of March 2014 at the Faculty of AHS. This is the first time such a lecture programme was organized in the University of Peradeniya. Dr.G.S.Shavindra R.Dias, Snr. Lecturer/ Consultant Psychiatrist, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya conducted the lecture for all academic and non academic staff of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This workshop was organized to educate the staff members on suicide preventive measures at the University.
A team from the Sri Lanka Nursing Council visited the Department of Nursing of the faculty on 13th of January 2014 under the site -visit programme in order to carry out the registration process of the Nursing students of the Faculty with the Nursing Council.
A "Bothi Pooja" programme organized by the staff of the Faculty of AHS was held with great success on 14th of March 2014 in order to bless the faculty of AHS, and all its endeavors and all staff & students. A large number of staff members participated. This event was organized to mark the 7th Birthday of the Faculty.
A one day workshop on "Research Methods and data Analysis using SPSS" organized by the Allied Health Science Education Unit of the Faculty of AHS with the collaboration of the Faculty of Science was held on 2nd and 16th of January 2014 at the PGIS. The workshop was organized for the permanent academic staff members of the Faculty.
Professor Yoshie Mori from the Gunma University visited the Faculty of AHS from 10th – 12th of March 2014, under the
signed between the Gunma University, Japan and the University of Peradeniya for a collaborative research project on "Development of a Distance education System to support development and education of Co- medical professionals in developing countries"
The registration of the new batch 2012/2013 of students was held on 19 ^th of February 2014 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. A meeting for the parents was organized on the same day to discuss the academic activities and the degree programmes of the Faculty
Ms. Bimali Weerakoon, lecturer from Department of Radiography and Radiotherapy was awarded 'Monbukaakusho' Japanese government funded scholarships for her Doctoral studies in Chiba University -Japan. She had an excellent record in her undergraduate career and she is a graduate from the first batch (05/ 06) of students that passed out from the faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
The faculty of Allied Health Sciences successfully conducted a 02 days workshop on 'How to incorporate ICT into undergraduate curriculum' for the academic staff members of the faculty. This workshop was funded by HETC project and was held at the Computing centre of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya on 08th and 22nd February 2014. Dr. R.Ragel and Mrs Iroshini Rathnapala from Engineering faculty contributed to the workshop as Resource persons. The aim of the workshop was to introduce 'MOODLE' as a learning management system to the participants. About 26 academic members participated.
A one day trip to Dambana, Mahiyangana was organized by the Staff Welfare Society of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences on 27th of February 2014. Around 40 staff members of the staff welfare society participated in the trip.

A one day Career Guidance workshop was held on 11th of October 2013 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This workshop was organized for the 2009/2010 batch of Allied Health Sciences and nursing Students of the Faculty. It was very successful and it has become change of attitudes and path of the students and the staff.
A one day training program on "Proper Handling of Histological Techniques" was successfully organized by the Department of Medical Laboratory Science of the Faculty at the laboratory of the Department on 14^th November 2013. This training program was mainly organized for technical officers who are involving in Histotechnology. It would helpful to clarify the problems & issues related to histotechnology and to enhance the practical knowledge.
This program was conducted by the Emeritus Professor S. Hirano, Department of Medical Technology, Niigata University, Japan.
Around 25 Technical Officers from the University were participated.
A one day career guidance workshop on "Future Minds – Higher Education and Career Guidance" organized by the Department of MLS was held on 09th September 2013 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This workshop was organized for 2007/08 and 2008/09 batch of Medical Laboratory Science students. It was very successful and it has become change of attitudes and path of the students and the staff.
A Prith, Dharmadeshanawa & Almsgivings programs organized by the students of the Faculty students & Buddhist Society were held with great success on 17th & 18th of August 2013 at the Faculty premises. Large numbers of students and the staff were participated. This event was organized to mark the 7th Birthday of the Faculty.

Under the MoU signed between the School of Health Sciences, Niigata University, Japan and the University of Peradeniya for student exchange programme, 09 students (Departments of Nursing, Radiography & MLS) of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences were offered a scholarship to follow a research study in the School of Health Sciences, Niigata University, Japan for the period of 05 months from first week of October 2013 to End of February 2014. A workshop on First Aid Techniques organized by the Department of MLS was held on 24th -25th August 2013 at the Faculty premises with the collaboration of St John's Ambulance Services. This workshop was organized for 2011/12 batch of MLS & Pharmacy students under "Lab practice, safety & First Aid' course module.
Under the MoU signed between the School of Health Sciences, Niigata University, Japan and the University of Peradeniya for student exchange programme, a team of delegates including 03 professor & 08 students (Nursing & Medical Laboratory Technology) from the Niigata University visited the Faculty of AHS from 25th August -04th September 2013, in the fourth consecutive years.
A one day workshop on "Ethnic Cohesion' under HETC Project for Allied Health students was held on 13th July 2013 at the faculty premises. This workshop was organized by the Faculty of AHS.Presentations on following matters were made during the workshop.
- Day today life in the University and How to communicate among University Students and staff
- Importance of communicating with different languages(Sinhala, Tamil & English)
- Improving relationship of AHS students with different ethnic groups during their clinical appointment.
A work shop on Use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) under HETC Project for Allied Health students was held on 16th July 2013 at the IT Center of the University of Peradeniya. This workshop was organized by the Faculty of AHS. Mr.A.L.I.Prasanna, Lecturer /Dept of Physiotherapy coordinated the workshop successfully.

The workshop was organized for the permanent and temporary academic staff members of the Faculty. Dr. Komintha Ponnemperuma, Senior Lecturer, Medical Education Unit, University of Colombo was the resource person for the workshop.

Prof.V.Weerasinghe (FoM), Prof.S.Samita (FoAgr.) and Dr.R.W Pallegama (FoDS) were the Resource Persons for the workshop. The workshop was successfully organized by the AHS Education Unit of the Faculty.
The 1st Annual Get-together of the Staff welfare Association of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was held on 01st of May 2013 at Faculty premises. To mark this event success, several fun games were organized in effective manner. All academic, non academic and executive staff was participated.

A one day workshop on "Forensic Radiography" was held on 23rd March 2013 at the premises of the faculty of AHS. More than 40 Diagnostic Radiographers working in government and private hospitals participated in this event. This workshop was conducted by the Department of Radiography/ Radiotherapy of the Faculty in collaboration with the Department of Forensic Medicines, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Peradeniya

A workshop on "How to develop yourself with office management" was held on 20th February 2013 at the Faculty of AHS. This workshop was opened for all non academic staff members of the Faculty and this was organized by the Deans' office of the Faculty.
A one day Education workshop on "Pain management for Physiotherapy and Nursing Students" was held on 30th January 2013 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Study of Pain(SLASP).
A workshop on "Sport Injury one day contentious professional development course was held on 15th February 2013 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences for 2007/08 batch of B.Sc Physiotherapy students and newly qualified physiotherapists. This programme was conducted by the Department of Physiotherapy in association with Sheffield Hallam University, UK

A special Guest Lecture on “Depression and Teens” for the 2008/09 & 2009/10 batch of nursing students was conducted by Dr.Gamini Randeni from the Kwantlen Polytecnic University, Canada on 09th November 2012 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This workshop was organized by the Department of Nursing of the Faculty.
A workshop on "Trauma Management" for the 2008/09 & 2009/10 batch of Nursing students was conducted on 14th -15th of December 2012 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. This workshop was organized by the Department of Nursing of the Faculty.

The Deyata Sewana National Tree Planting Campaign was held on 15.11.2012 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and also an “Herbal Garden” was inaugurated at the Faculty on the same day. Few medicinal plants were planted by Dr.DBM .Wickramaratne, the Dean of the Faculty and the Head of the Departments. staff and students were actively participated.

Final results of the 1st batch of Pharmacy students(2005/2006) of the FAHS have been released for the award of Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and they will participate at the next convercation.

X-Ray unit of the faculty of AHS is now in operation and X-ray images at very affordable rates can be obtained.
Physiotheraphy sevice unit of FAHS is providing treatment for outpatients at very affordable rates

The Sri Lanka Seth Sewa Foundation donated a large number of books to the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and the handing over function was held in the Faculty premises on 20th January 2012.

First batch of students (2005/06) who have enrolled at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences has now completed their prescribed course work and qualified for the graduation. A total of 159 students received their respective degree award in the annual convocation held on 14th March 2012.

‘Going Down’ function of the 1st batch of students of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was held on 19th February 2012 at the WUS premises with great success.

The Foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction of New Building (Basement floor, Ground floor and 1stfloor)for the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya was held on 24thFebruary 2012 at the Faculty premises. The Vice Chancellor was the Chief Guest. The Deputy Vice Chancellor, staff members and students of the Faculty were participated at the function. The contract for Building of basement floor, ground floor and 1st floor of the proposed building was offered to Waterman Engineering (Pvt.) limited for the value of 4.2 million and the site works are currently in progress.

Volume 04 of the Sri Lanka Bulletin of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences is due to published soon. Manuscripts for the publishing in next issue are being entertained now.

Students of the Department of Physiotherapy participated actively and organized 02 stalls on the topics " BACK CARE" and "SPORTS NUTRITION" in Sri Lanka Sports medicine Exhibition held at Buddhist Cultural Center, Colombo on 23rd January 2012

The Department of Physiotherapy has initiated a community based rehabilitation programme in Kandy district from March 2012. The Physiotherapy students will be doing field visits and involving in community works.

The Department of Radiography/ Radiotherapy of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences successfully conducted a workshop on “Radiation protection for Medical Radiographers" on 25th February 2012 in collaboration with Department of Nuclear Science, University of Colombo

‘Nigmaneta Pera” a Going Down’ function of the 2nd batch of students (2006/07) of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was held on 12th August 2012 at the WUS premises with great success.

A workshop on “First Aid Techniques” organized by the Department of MLS was held 18th -19th Feb 2012 at the Faculty with the collaboration of St John’s Ambulance Services. 2010/11 batch of MLS & Pharmacy students was participated

A “Dharmadeshanawa” & “Dansala” programmes organized by the Faculty Buddhist society were held with great success on 2nd May 2012 at the Faculty premises. Large numbers of students and the staff were participated.

A “Bakthi Geetha” Programme organized by the Faculty Buddhist society was held with great success on 8th May 2012 at the Faculty premises. Large numbers of students and the staff were participated.

Anti - Dengue campaign, inspection & Shramadana works were carried out by the staff of the Faculty of AHS on 13th July 2012. All staff actively participated.

Shramadana works at the Faculty were carried out on 27th July & 30th August 2012 with great success. All staff were actively participated.

A Symphosium on “STIs and HIV for AHS students” organized by the Department of MLS was held on 26th May 2012 at the faculty with the collaboration of STD/AIDS control programme unit, Kandy. 2006/07 batch of MLS, 2007/08 & 2008/09 batch of Nursing & MLS students were participated.

A training Course on" Emergency Life Care srilanka & Emergency Medicine” for government medical officer was held from 6th-10th August 2012 at Faculty of AHS. This programme was coordinated by Prof. CDA. Goonasekera, Chairman, SSCCEM ELC Sri Lanka. After the programme, all equipment supplied by Australians team for the programme were donated to the Department of Nursing (Skill Lab).
