The English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was established along with the inception of the Faculty in 2006, for the purpose of providing academic support for the students to follow the degree programmes in the English medium.
To achieve the above, the ELTU conducts two courses: the Foundation Course and the Ongoing Course in English and Communication Skills. All new entrants follow the Foundation Course for a period of 3-4 weeks, which is incorporated with the Orientation Programme of the Faculty. The students follow the Ongoing Course in English and communication Skills in the first, second and the final year of their degree programme.
The primary focus of the course in the first and the second years is to help students follow the degree programme by improving the four main language skills. Thus, the course material is based on English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The final year course focuses on scientific writing, project presentation and viva voce. In addition, the requirements of the English language of students in proceeding higher studies and career development are fulfilled to a substantial level.
